VERMILLION, S.D. -- “Mischief of a Sleepwalker,” a Master of Fine Arts graduation exhibition by USD student Shaun D. Southers, will be on display at the Main Gallery of the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts, April 4-8. An opening reception for the artist is at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 8.
Southers, of Kansas City, Mo., is a studio art major with an emphasis in painting at The University of South Dakota. He has been working to bridge the gap between art and life using found or disregarded materials to help in that process.
The many processes found within Southers’s paintings almost become a blanket of visual white noise causing the viewer to become overwhelmed within the overall composition. In one such piece, “Yellow Belly,” viewers can find screen-printing, nick-knacks, hand applied photo emulsion photo transfers, and oil painting, to name a few, as well as some items of significance to the individuals being depicted.
The exhibition is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. For more information about the exhibit, please contact Cory Knedler, chair of the USD Department of Art, at (605) 677-5637 or Cory.Knedler@usd.edu.
