USD Director of Choral Activities presented with 2013 Encore Award

VERMILLION, S.D. -- David Holdhusen, Ph.D., director of choral activities and associate professor of music at the University of South Dakota, was awarded the 2013 Encore Award from the South Dakota Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association.

The Encore Award is presented annually to a choral director from South Dakota in recognition of excellence and achievement in the field of choral music. Holdhusen, who has been a member of the department of music faculty since 2008, received the award from South Dakota American Choral Directors Association President Ann Deckert during the South Dakota Honor Choir concert in Sioux Falls, S.D. earlier this month.

In addition to teaching courses in conducting, choral literature and techniques, and applied voice, Holdhusen serves as conductor of the university’s three choral ensembles: Chambers Singers, Concert Choir and Men’s & Women’s Choir. Additionally, he is director of USD’s annual Choral Directors Institute as well as the USD Summer Music Camp, and is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, including president of the South Dakota chapter; the College Music Society; the National Collegiate Choral Organization and the National Association for Music Education. Holdhusen received his Ph.D. in music education from Florida State University, his M.M. in choral conducting from Northwestern University, and his B.A. in music with education certification from Gustavus Adolphus College.
