USD Mortar Board honor society hosts Trick or Trot 5K fundraiser

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Mortar Board at the University of South Dakota is hosting a Halloween-themed race to raise money for its national project, “Reading is Leading.”

Mortar Board is hosting its second annual Trick or Trot 5K Run/Walk at 10 a.m. on Nov. 3 at Prentis Park in Vermillion. Participants are encouraged to wear their favorite Halloween costumes and awards will be presented for Best Individual Costume and Best Group Costume. There will also be a pumpkin smash for $2.

The event is open to all USD students, faculty, staff and Vermillion residents. Preregistration for the event is $10 and registration the day of the race is $12. Participants can also donate books for $2 off registration costs, but all book donations are appreciated. Proceeds and books received will be donated to Vermillion elementary schools to improve children’s literacy.

Mortar Board is a National Honor Society recognizing seniors for their outstanding scholarship, leadership and service. Members are elected during the second semester of their junior year through an application process. Students must have shown substantial campus leadership and at least a 3.2 GPA. Mortar Board selects up to 35 new members each year.
