VERMILLION, S.D. -- The Accounting and Finance Division of the University of South Dakota recently honored alumni and recognized the outstanding academic achievements of current accounting and finance students at its annual recognition and awards dinner.
Alumni honored on Thursday, Nov. 6 were Michael Fincher, Senior Tax Manager, Deloitte Tax LLP of Minneapolis, Minn.; JoAnn Kunkel, Chief Financial Officer, Sanford Health of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Kevin Seaman, a partner with KMPG of New York City. All three individuals were honored for their outstanding service to the Accounting and Finance Division of the Beacom School of Business.
Fincher has more than 14 years of experience assisting clients in the area of corporate and cooperative taxation. He specializes in cooperative taxation and corporate reorganizations and consolidations, including mergers and acquisitions, spin-offs, liquidations and dispositions. Fincher leads Deloitte sponsored training seminars in the area of corporate reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions, and accounting periods and methods at the local, regional and national level on a regular basis. He holds a Master of Science in Taxation degree from American University as well as a Master of Professional Accountancy degree and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from the University of South Dakota.
As chief financial officer at Sanford Health, Kunkel is responsible for the financial operations of the health system. Kunkel began employment with Sanford in December 1992 and has held various finance positions within the health system. She received her bachelor’s degree in accounting and an M.B.A. degree, both from the University of South Dakota.
Seaman graduated from USD in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree and earned his M.P.A. in 1987, after which he spent a year as an accounting instructor in the Business School at USD. Seaman has spent 26 years in public accounting, specializing in providing financial statement reporting, audit and advisory services to financial services companies. He started his public accounting career with McGladrey & Pullen in Sioux Falls and joined KPMG in 1996 in Hartford, Conn. Seaman spent several years working in Europe at KPMG offices in London and Zurich, and he is currently an audit partner in KPMG’s New York City office.
Several USD students were also recognized for their academic performance for the 2013-14 academic year. Top performance award recipients were nominated by accounting and finance faculty after submitting applications and resumes. Award winners were selected based on their academic achievements, including active membership in USD’s accounting and finance organizations, and by participating in community service activities. Top performance award winners were Carlye Williams of Madison, S.D., Josie Johnson of Canton, S.D., Kathryn Staley of Charter Oak, Iowa, Shane VanDeBerg of Garretson, S.D., Bailey Fish of Brandon, S.D., Kara Fischbach and Vonda Cotton of Vermillion, Nicholas Monahan of Wayne, Neb., Tanner Comp of Sioux Falls, S.D., Amanda Kellen of Cherokee, Iowa, Madison Koehler of Rock Valley, Iowa, Quinn Pieper of Norfolk, Neb., Carrie Wintle of Iroquois, S.D., Amanda Rausch of Watertown, S.D. and Hunter Serfoss of Aberdeen, S.D.
