The Community College for Sioux Falls is offering 10 scholarships of up to $5,000 each for nontraditional, low-income or underserved students who seek to finish their first baccalaureate degree. The priority deadline is Aug. 1, 2019.

“The Crankstart Re-Entry Scholarship Program is a valuable asset to the Sioux Falls community and will be a key factor in encouraging hard-working individuals in our workforce to earn a degree to progress in their careers,” USD President Sheila K. Gestring said. “For many in the workforce, re-entry into college to complete their degree can be challenging, and the Crankstart Re-Entry Scholarship Program will ease those challenges.”

To qualify for the scholarship, students must:

  • Have experienced a cumulative gap in their education of five or more years

  • Anticipate workforce participation for a significant period of time after graduation

The USD Community College for Sioux Falls – formerly known as University Center – offers a wide variety of degree programs at its campus in northwest Sioux Falls. It is designed to primarily serve nontraditional or adult learners who are site-bound, English language learners or members of the workforce looking to acquire credentials to better prepare them for the local workforce, said Carmen M. Simone, vice president and dean for the Community College for Sioux Falls.

“We are so pleased that the Community College for Sioux Falls has been selected to participate in the Crankstart Re-Entry Scholarship Program,” Simone said. “This national program assists nontraditional students who have been out of school for at least five years with a financial incentive to return to classes. This is a tremendous opportunity for community members, and it will enable us to play a role in building a stronger workforce for Sioux Falls.”
