VERMILLION, S.D. – This fall, the University of South Dakota will introduce a rebranded Gallagher Center for Experiential Learning & Education Abroad, which will replace the former Center for Academic and Global Engagement.
Offering resources for students who want to enrich their academic experiences while making themselves marketable after graduation, the center provides a variety of opportunities for students such as:
- Alternative Week of Off-Campus Learning (AWOL)
- Study abroad
- National Student Exchange
- Undergraduate research and creative scholarship
- Nationally competitive awards and fellowships
This name change will be made to honor two USD alumni and benefactors, Tom and Nancy Gallagher, for decades of devoted service, leadership and generosity to the university. The Gallaghers co-chaired USD’s historic comprehensive capital campaign Onward: The Campaign for South Dakota that closed in June after reaching more than $270 million in gifts and pledges. In addition, the two have also worked diligently to ensure students can enrich their academic experience through international travel by establishing the International Opportunity Fund that provides undergraduate students with travel assistance abroad. This generous gift has impacted more than 85 students in recent years.
“Tom and Nancy Gallagher have made a lasting impact on the lives of USD students,” said USD President Sheila K. Gestring. “Their generosity has created incredible opportunities not only here on campus, but also across the globe as our students study abroad.”
The new name of this center, located in I.D. Weeks Library Room 103, will take effect on Oct. 1, 2019.
