USD Among Best Colleges for Military Veterans

VERMILLION, S.D. — The University of South Dakota ranks among the top four-year colleges nationally for military veterans, according to the 2016 Best for Vets list released Monday by Military Times.

USD, with about 650 veterans among its nearly 10,000 students, made the list at 101. Military Times said it used a survey to evaluate schools as well as newly released public data to compile its list, including information from the Veterans Affairs Department, Defense Department and three Education Department databases on everything from veteran-related policies to average salaries after graduation.

USD's Veterans Services division offers a variety of help to prospective and current students who have a military background.

Founded in 1862 and the first university in the Dakotas, the University of South Dakota is the only public liberal arts university in the state, with 198 undergraduate and 79 graduate programs in the College of Arts & Sciences, School of Education, School of Law, Sanford School of Medicine, School of Health Sciences, Beacom School of Business and College of Fine Arts. With an enrollment of more than 10,000 students and more than 400 faculty, USD has a 16:1 student/faculty ratio, and it ranks among the best in academics and affordability. USD’s 18 athletic programs compete at the NCAA Division I level.
