Chemical hazards and toxic substances pose a wide range of health hazards (such as irritation, sensitization and carcinogenicity) and physical hazards (such as flammability, corrosion and explosibility).
The goal of the chemical safety program is to provide an environment for employees and students that is free from potential exposure to the chemicals that are used at USD. This program provides information and guidelines to address proper use, handling and storage of chemicals.
We require that each USD laboratory maintain a current inventory. We require that all new members of the laboratory be trained on the chemicals and processes in the lab. Training documentation should be maintained.
You can find detailed information about chemical safety in the USD Chemical Safety Manual including chemical safety policies and safe work practices. Make sure you understand the hazards of the chemicals that you are handling.
