Neuroscience and behavioral science within USD's Sanford School of Medicine is an emerging strength at USD. Faculty members engage in dynamic research that links human health and the effects of stress, injury and disease on the brain and neurological system. Pioneering research in the areas of learning and memory, recovery from stroke, cellular mechanisms of stress and addiction and the effects of bullying on the adolescent brain are ares of focus of USD researchers and students.

Biomedical researchers team up with researchers in USD's psychology program to examine real world issues such as PTSD, addiction, and stress and their effects on the human brain. In partnership with Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota, researchers have access to state of the art functional MRI brain imaging equipment to gain a better understanding of the brain under stress.
