If you are searching for summer employment or for a job at our DakotaDome pool as a certified lifeguard, look to the Wellness Center to help you get certified. You must be at least 15 years old and pass swimming requirements to receive your certification. Classes include video, group discussion and hands-on practice. Lifeguard certification is valid for two years.

To enroll in the lifeguarding course you must be at least 15 years of age before the last scheduled session, unless pre-authorized. To participate in the course you must be able to complete the pretest skills (see below).

Lifeguard Recertification

Current certified lifeguards can renew their certification at our lifeguard renewal course. This class is offered annually in the spring. To enroll in the lifeguarding recertification course you must have a lifeguarding certification that is no more than 30 days past expiration. Lifeguard Certification Prerequisite Swimming Skills

  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control & rhythmic breathing.  Candidates may swim using the front crawl and/or breaststroke.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
  • Timed Event: Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breast stroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 lb brick, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to starting point with the brick, exit the water using the ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

If is determined that you do not have the necessary swimming ability to pass this course, you will not receive the lifeguard certification and will receive a refund of $110.
