Crum received his Ph.D. in history from Arizona State University and his research interests include the ethnohistory of North America, Native American higher education and the Western Shoshone.

Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776 during the American Revolution. Only about 10 percent of the nation’s institutions of higher learning have Phi Beta Kappa chapters and only about 10 percent of the arts and sciences graduates of these distinguished institutions are selected for Phi Beta Kappa membership. USD is the only public or private university in South Dakota to shelter a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. The Lifto Amundson Lecture was established by Marjorie Lifto Amundson and her son, Dr. Loren Amundson of Sioux Falls, S.D. Both Marjorie Lifto Amundson and Dr. Loren Amundson were initiated into USD’s Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.
