This year, the Art of Sustainability is celebrating the local National Park, the Missouri National Recreational River—by way of the arts. The event will honor the life of Nancy Carlsen, a long-time Vermillion resident and environmental activist who worked to help others appreciate the Missouri River and area history.

"I really appreciate the explicit focus on art in the Art of Sustainability because art is such a powerful way through which we can communicate our feelings and values towards others and our environment," said Meghann Jarchow, director of the Sustainability Program at USD.
