For more than 20 years, Duncan has been involved in professional counseling organizations at the state, regional and national levels. Additionally, she has served as a member of the South Dakota Board of Education for 14 years and is currently in her fourth year as president. In this role, Duncan has tirelessly advocated for the South Dakota Department of Education to consider including school counselors in education initiatives and promote the vital role counselors play in the lives of children and families.

During her 15 years as executive director of the South Dakota Counseling Association, Duncan served as a strong advocate for professional counselors by lobbying for state legislation related to licensure, third-party reimbursement for counselors, utilization of licensed/certified professionals by state agencies, and for mandating that schools hire certified school counselors at the appropriate ratios.
