Animal Shades on display at University Art Galleries at USD
On display in the John A. Day Gallery through April 1, “Animal Shades” explores the infinitely complex relationship between animals and humans, according to Bondarchuk, who will personally present her artwork at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13 in room 172 at the Warren M. Lee Center for Fine Arts. Coinciding with her visit, the University Art Galleries will host a reception for the artist from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 15 in the Day Gallery.
Bondarchuk is a professor and Foundation Area Coordinator at Western Michigan University. She received her M.F.A. degrees in Sculpture from Ohio State University. To research the relationship between humans and animals, Bondarchuk visited 13 different caves in the south of France and northern Spain to view prehistoric depictions of animals on the cave walls. For “Animal Shades,” she represents crows and ravens as highly intelligent creatures, and her depictions counter the dominance humans have assumed over the animal world.
The John A. Day Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on the weekends by special appointment. The reception for “Animal Shades” is part of a communitywide Animal Arts Crawl Family Weekend in Vermillion. The exhibition, artist presentation and reception are all free and open to the public.
