Dr. Sincan is an assistant professor of medicine at the University of South Dakota's Sanford School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey, and post-doctoral training at National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. His career has focused on developing informatics approaches to improve the management and analysis of biomedical data and processes, decision support and translational research. He has a deep interest in genomics, bioinformatics, rare diseases and ontologies.

This presentation was open to the public. Speaking to a capacity crowd, Dr. Sincan discussed various aspects of the U.S. healthcare system, Imagenetics program, the Sanford Chip, data analytics efforts at Imagenetics and the development of precision healthcare. Sanford Health is at the forefront of genomic medicine with the Imagenetics program, which integrates genetic data with clinical data to enable precision medicine and prevention at population scale.

“In the realm of precision healthcare, medicine and big data are merged together,” said Venky Venkatachalam, dean of the Beacom School of Business. “University of South Dakota academic programs are well-positioned to provide expertise to meet the needs of the industry in this emerging interdisciplinary field.”

The Beacom Scholar Series showcases the business school’s faculty and outside speakers through presentations of their research. The series aims to recognize research, provide a forum to pursue collaborative research, and celebrate and recognize research successes. The presenters in the series are mostly USD faculty members, but speakers from other universities who are recognized and well established scholars in their own field have been brought in as well. Students are encouraged attend so that they can learn about research opportunities.
