Beacom School of Business Hosts 15th Annual Summer Accounting Institute
The five-day event provided students with the opportunity to learn about the accounting profession and featured lectures and presentations from USD faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the Beacom School of Business. Program attendees also had the opportunity to visit with representatives from local, regional and several leading accounting firms, including Deloitte, KPMG, Ketel Thorstenson, POET, Raven Industries and Eide Bailly.
“The Summer Accounting Institute is a program that offers high school students an enhanced educational experience by connecting them with successful accounting executives,” said Dean Venky Venkatachalam, Ph.D. “These real-life opportunities are the key to their future success in accounting.”
“The Summer Accounting Institute is an exhilarating time on campus when we get to welcome high school students and introduce them to the world of accounting in an unconventional but enlightening way,” said accounting instructor Erin Cornelsen. “It offers a tremendous opportunity for students to experience the opportunities available for accounting through the various facets.”
The following students were awarded $500 scholarships for their outstanding enthusiasm and knowledge of the accounting profession.

- Alyssa Goble; Blunt, South Dakota
- Haley Merrow; Sioux Falls, South Dakota
- Asher Hake; Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Attendees stay in USD dorms during the event, and enjoy social programs, as well as more formal learning sessions. Scholarships to the annual institute are available by contacting the Beacom School of Business at USD. High school sophomores and juniors interested in accounting or business are eligible to attend.
