Teams will be tested on all things science -- from biology and chemistry to computer science and engineering -- with an emphasis on learning, participation, interaction, team spirit and having fun.

“USD has the opportunity to host some of the best and brightest science students from the state of South Dakota,” said Clark Bennett, state director of the South Dakota Science Olympiad. “I hope that students have fun and find a greater love for the sciences.”

Teams are divided into two divisions (junior/middle school and high school) and each team will compete in 23 events that range from paper-and-pencil tests to outdoor events. The competitions include building airplanes and gliders to fly for as long as possible; constructing bridges with the lightest material that can hold the most weight; and building vehicles to travel a certain distance and then stop. Participants can also take advantage of their time on campus with open house activities during the day, including a presentation by the USD Physics Club.

Schools scheduled to participate: Brookings High School, Dakota Valley Middle School and High School (North Sioux City), Edison Middle School (Sioux Falls), Elk Point-Jefferson Middle School, Little Wound High School (Kyle), Madison High School, Mickelson Middle School (Brookings), Sacred Heart Middle School (Yankton), Spearfish High School, Tea Area High School, Todd County High School (Mission), Vermillion Middle School and Yankton Middle School and High School.
