The program, “Celebrating 40 Years of Excellence: The Journey Continues,” features honorary guests such as Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., and his wife, Barb, and Charlie Anderson, the Center’s first director, and an awards ceremony. Awards will be presented for Advocacy in Action to Shelly Pfaff and the South Dakota Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities; Collaboration (Black Hills Special Services Coop Autism Program); and Distinguished Service to Deb Bowman, Senior Advisor to Gov. Dennis Daugaard.

Originally started as the South Dakota Developmental Disabilities Evaluation Center, the Center for Disabilities had many names through the years as well as several locations, including USD's Department of Special Education in the School of Education in 1971. Today, the Center is located at the Health Science Center in Sioux Falls and works with others to create opportunities that enhance the lives of people with disabilities and their families through training, services, information, research and community education.

A division of the Department of Pediatrics at the Sanford School of Medicine, the Center for Disabilities is South Dakota’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Service (UCEDD).
