Marten is professor of history and chair at Marquette University and a member of the Program of Distinguished Lecturers of the Organization of American Historians. He teaches courses on the Civil War and on children’s history. He is the author of “The Children’s Civil War” (1998), which was selected as an Outstanding Academic Book by Choice Magazine, and “Sing Not War: The Lives of Union and Confederate Veterans in Gilded Age America” (2011). He also directs Children in Urban America (www.marquette.edu/cuap), an online archive of documents related to the history of children, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Sponsored by the USD Department of History, the Schell Lecture is named after Dean Herbert S. Schell (1899-1994), who served the University of South Dakota and the State of South Dakota for more than 40 years. Schell provided leadership as history department chair from 1946 to 1955. From 1936 to 1964, he served as director and then dean of the USD Graduate School. Following his retirement, Schell was University Archivist and received the title Dean Emeritus in 1969. Additionally, he was presented with the Will G. Robinson Memorial Award and was inducted into the Western Writers Hall of Fame for his work in western and South Dakota history. Schell was also the first scholar to receive the annual South Dakota Cowboy and Western Heritage Hall of Fame Writer of the Year Award in 1983.
