The top winners from school contests took part in the regional competitions in Vermillion, Sioux Falls, Watertown, Mitchell and Rapid City. The top three winners from each of those sites now advance to the state contest, which will be streamed live online at www.usd.edu/spellingbee on Saturday, March 19 beginning at 10 a.m. (CDT). The student who wins state will then compete May 23-27 at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington.

The regional contest winners:

Southeast South Dakota (Vermillion), sponsored by USD:

1st: Logan Gregg, Vermillion Middle School, 8th grade

2nd: Harshavardhan Kadarkaraisamy, Vermillion Middle School, 6th grade

3rd: Christine Awo Addo, Dakota Valley Upper Elementary School (North Sioux City), 5th grade

1st: Sierra Oesterling, South Dakota Christian Home Educators (Custer), 5th grade

2nd: Devyn Brennan, St. Elizabeth Seaton (Rapid City), 4th grade

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is administered on a not-for-profit basis by the E.W. Scripps Co. and local spelling bee sponsors in the United States, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Department of Defense Schools in Europe; also, the Bahamas, Canada, China, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea. The competition is open for students in first grade through the eighth grade.
