The celebration, which features all-day activities at the old ice rink at the corner of Pine Street and Cherry Street – across from Burger King, is also a fundraiser for the South Dakota Wildlife Federation and includes everything from live music to games for people of all ages.

"This is a great event for our students as well as people in the community. Getting involved to protect the environment is one of the most important actions that we can take," said Terry Robertson, Ph.D., director of the IdEA program and associate professor and chairperson of the department of communication studies. "The South Dakota Wildlife Federation has been a wonderful partner for us and we are grateful to them. I hope people take time on Earth Day to remember how each of us can make an environmental difference."

In addition to live music, USD’s Earth Day schedule includes speakers with information on environmental sustainability and earth-friendly ideas along with tips to help people live an environmentally healthy lifestyle; arts and crafts utilizing earth-friendly materials and ideas; a 10K bike race ($15 registration fee) and a 5K fun run ($15 registration fee); kids activities like face painting and a Moon Walk; and a variety of activities and games for the whole family, including a chipping contest, baseball throw, free throw contest, bean bag toss and much more.

Food items of note during Earth Day include locally grown fare such as buffalo burgers, pork loin roast, potatoes, vegetables and more. There will also be a bake sale with all proceeds benefitting the South Dakota Wildlife Federation available throughout the day.
