Education Dean Reports to State Board on USD Year Long Residency
Donald Easton-Brooks, dean of the School of Education at the University of South Dakota, said the year-long residency for student teachers is a popular program that should be expanded within South Dakota and throughout the nation. Easton-Brooks highlighted advantages of the program in a presentation to the South Dakota Board of Education this week.
USD has been working on the year-long residency since 2009 with funding from the Bush Foundation. This fall USD has placed more than 100 student teachers in 22 school districts. More than 400 student teachers have successfully graduated from the program, and 229 of them are teaching in South Dakota schools.
Easton-Brooks says school districts would like to take more USD student teachers, but the university has no more to provide. He says the challenge will be finding ways to transfer the USD model to other universities in South Dakota and around the nation. Read more in the Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan.
