The audit was completed as part of the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), which was implemented to improve the overall quality of crime data collected by law enforcement and captures detailed data about criminal incidents from local law enforcement across the nation to identify trends and guide policy.

“NIBRS is one of the ways UPD shares crime statistics regarding our campus,” said Bryant Jackson, Ed.D., chief of University Police. “The detailed nature of our officers’ reports allows UPD to report accurate statistics to the FBI for inclusion in the NIBRS database. I am thankful for our team's daily hard work to make things like this possible.”

The audit investigated reporting practices and procedures and reviewed a random sampling of UPD’s police reports to assess the accuracy of narratives and the classifications used for reporting.
