To achieve this recognition, USD’s FMA chapter met or exceeded several specific criteria established by FMA International, including the ability to demonstrate exemplary chapter management and excelling in providing members with many program activities.

"This award exemplifies the commitment and dedication of the Beacom School of Business students who are FMA officers and members," noted Angeline Lavin, Ph.D., professor of finance at USD and FMA advisor.

As a chapter, FMA is dedicated to opening doors to the financial world for USD students in a variety of ways. This past year, students from USD’s FMA chapter met with Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, in Omaha. According to Lavin, USD’s FMA chapter has met privately with Buffett twice since 2006. The group has arranged another meeting with the legendary investor for February 2009.

In addition to meeting with influential financiers from business and investing firms, members participated in three financial institution and corporation tours, developed a chapter résumé book and inducted five students into the FMA National Honor Society. USD’s FMA chapter also publishes a yearly newsletter for business faculty, students and alumni, and maintains its own website (www.usd.edu/business/fma/) where information on FMA projects as well as joining the organization is available.

"The FMA chapter continues to focus on bringing the real world of finance to USD business students by bringing speakers from the financial services industry to campus and providing opportunities for business students to participate in field trips to places such as New York City, Chicago and Omaha," Lavin added.
