"We're very proud of the commitment and dedication of our students, who have made significant contributions to our FMA chapter,” noted Angeline Lavin, Ph.D., professor of finance at USD and FMA adviser.

To achieve Superior Chapter recognition, USD's FMA chapter met or exceeded several specific criteria established by FMA International, including the ability to demonstrate exemplary chapter management and excelling in providing members with many program activities.

As a chapter, FMA is dedicated to opening doors to the financial world for USD students in a variety of ways. This past year, students from USD’s FMA chapter met with Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, in Omaha while touring Berkshire Hathaway owned companies Borsheim Jeweler and Nebraska Furniture Mart. According to Lavin, USD’s FMA chapter has met privately with Buffett three times since 2006, including the February 2009 luncheon at Piccolo Pete’s in Omaha.

In addition to meeting with influential financiers from business and investing firms, members also benefit from seminars and workshops, field trips and networking opportunities, and participation in community service projects. USD’s FMA chapter also publishes a yearly newsletter for business faculty, students and alumni, and maintains its own Web site (orgs.usd.edu/fma/) where information on FMA upcoming events as well as information on becoming a member of the organization is available.

"For the upcoming academic year, we have a lot of exciting events planned to bring the real world of finance to USD business students, including a Q&A session with Mr. Buffett in November and a field trip to New York City where FMA members will have an opportunity to visit with various professionals in finance," added Yemun Yip, Ph.D., associate professor of finance and FMA adviser.
