“This is an outstanding achievement and I’m very proud of our students, who have dedicated several hours of hard work outside the classroom,” noted Angeline Lavin, Ph.D., professor of finance at USD and FMA adviser. “This recognition is all about their commitment to building a strong FMA chapter at USD.”

To achieve this prestigious recognition from FMA International, USD’s FMA chapter met or exceeded several specific criteria, including the ability to demonstrate exemplary chapter management and providing members with many program activities.

Last year, USD’s FMA chapter organized a 90-minute Q&A with Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. USD FMA also toured Berkshire Hathaway owned companies Borsheims Jewelry and Nebraska Furniture Mart. According to Lavin, 2009 was the fourth time since 2006 that USD students have met privately with Buffett. She said FMA members will have a fifth opportunity to gain the financial insights of one of the world’s richest men when USD students meet with Buffett this October.

In addition to meeting with influential financiers from business and investing firms, like Buffett, members also traveled to New York City last fall, participated in community service projects, and attended various seminars and workshops. USD’s FMA chapter also publishes a yearly newsletter for business faculty, students and alumni, and maintains its own Web site (http://orgs.usd.edu/fma/index.htm) where information on upcoming events as well as information on becoming a member of the organization is available. In addition to Lavin, members of the finance faculty contributing as advisers to USD’s FMA chapter include Kumoli Ramakrishnan, Ph.D., Yewmun Yip, Ph.D., and Hunter An, Ph.D.
