The 2010 race/walk takes participants on a scenic route of Vermillion beginning at Prentis Park at 9 a.m. Prizes from the 5K will be awarded to the first place finishers in the male and female categories of 15 and under, 16 to 25 years old, 26 to 54 years old, and 55 and over. T-shirts and refreshments will also be provided. Pre-registration is $10 by Sept. 8 while cost is $15 after that date, including the day of the race.

Registration forms for the Nikki’s Fund 5K Run/Walk for Suicide Awareness are available at the Muenster University Center on the USD campus; the USD Student Counseling Center, which is located in Julian Hall 336, the office side of the building; on-line at www.allsportcentral.com; or participants can complete a registration form the day of the event beginning at 8 a.m. All proceeds from the event, including the registration fee and in-kind donations, will go to Nikki’s Fund, which was established in memory of Nicole Vallie Harris, the daughter of Janine Harris, manager of the Al Neuharth Media Center, who died from suicide on June 15, 2005. Nikki’s Fund donations support suicide prevention programs and other mental health needs for USD students.

Additional activities planned for National Suicide Prevention Week on the USD campus, which is the week of Sept. 5-11, include information booths with pre-, inter- and postvention suicide materials, and “Kristin’s Story,” a program by Andrea Cooper, at 7 p.m. on Sept. 9 at the Muenster University Center Ballroom. “Kristin’s Story” details the loss of Andrea’s 20 year-old daughter, Kristin, who died as a result of suicide.
