The soon-to-be high school seniors from South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota had an opportunity to learn about health care professions and meet with more than 30 professionals representing a wide range of specialty areas June 19-24. In addition to daily sessions that introduced students to the various career opportunities available to them in health care, participants were able to speak directly with presenters and ask career-minded questions about the health care industry. During the week students toured the Sanford Vermillion Medical Center and the Sanford School of Medicine’s gross anatomy lab, became certified in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and familiarized themselves with the University of South Dakota campus and medical school. On the last full day of camp, students traveled to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and toured the Sanford Medical Center and Southeast Technical Institute (STI). While at STI, students learned about an exciting partnership program between STI and USD that may allow them to save both time and money as they begin their post high school education.

Students participating in this year’s camp from South Dakota included Carly Campbell, Randa Mikkelsen and Zachary Smit, of Brandon; Sangah Park, of Brookings, Maggie Boever and Brooke Kaiser, of Dell Rapids; Brittney Sween, of Gary; Tasia Featherman, of Kyle; Latisha Stoneman, of Mission; Jesse Roshau, of Mobridge; Isabelle Lehman, Meagan Potrzeba, Brooke Wiest and Raegan Winder, of Pierre; Kade Bettelyoun, of Pine Ridge; Tayla Bahr, of Rapid City; Noel Utecht, of Redfield; Feven Aregay, Jade Bolin, Paige Heitkamp, Rachel Novak, Tiana Rausch, Abby Schultz and Surekchha Siwakoti, of Sioux Falls; McKenna Gruba, of Summerset; Lily Harvison, of Valley Springs; Morgan Herbster and Erin Weightman, of Vermillion; Makena Mette, of Volga; Healther Block, Shane Gonnelly and Kaitlyn Laney, of Watertown. Students from Iowa included Trent Behr, Maria Cerrillos-Martinez, Valeria Magana, Camden Tolvanen and Noel Tolvanen, of Sioux City. Students from Minnesota included Sophie Johnson, of Jackson. And students from Nebraska included Salmen, of Jackson, Nebraska.

Sponsorship of the 10th annual Healthcare Careers Summer Camp was provided by Sanford Vermillion Medical Center, the Dakota Hospital Foundation, Delta Dental of South Dakota Foundation, South Dakota Department of Rural Health, USD Sanford School of Medicine, Northeast South Dakota Area Health Education Center, USD School of Health Sciences, Sanford Health and the Seventh District Medical Society.

The 11th annual Healthcare Careers Summer Camp is tentatively scheduled for June 18-23, 2017. Registration is open to students entering 10th through 12th grades in the fall of 2017. Students are selected to participate based on their academic record, previous volunteer experience and a personal statement written by the student.
