Hoy family honored with room dedication at The U
Hoy McCahren, who received her bachelor’s degree from The U in 1957 along with her M.A. (1962) and a doctorate in educational administration (1986), is a native of Vermillion. She taught English and worked in the Department of Modern Languages at USD for more than 25 years before becoming the executive director of The U’s Alumni Association in 1990, a position she held until her retirement in 2004. As one of USD’s most ardent boosters, she was the first woman to serve on the USD Athletic Board of Control and she continues her involvement with the school as a volunteer on the Coyote Athletics Sports Hall of Fame Committee. Nancy and her husband, Lee, currently reside in Vermillion.
Hoy McCahren’s life-long interest in Coyote Athletics can be traced back to her youth watching her father coach basketball and track and field at USD.Rube Hoy, a member of the South Dakota Hall of Fame, also played football and basketball after enrolling at USD as a student in 1915. As a coach, his basketball teams won three North Central Conference championships in 1930, 1931 and 1939. From 1932 to 1957, he served as athletics director at USD. He passed away in 1973.
In appreciation for the Hoy family’s loyalty and many years of service to USD, the first floor corner solarium in the Muenster University Center was officially named the Hoy Room during the 2009 Alumni Banquet at the Muenster University Center on Friday, Oct. 9.
