Hosted by USD’s Black Law Students Association (BLSA), the annual Thurgood Marshall Program is free and open to the public, and is presented in conjunction with the Law School Admission Council’s “DiscoverLaw.org Month” program.

“We’re excited to have Judge Belcher visit and look forward to an impressive presentation,” said Andrew Twinamatsiko, a third-year USD Law student and BLSA spokesman. “She brings a wealth of experiences and insight from many areas, including national issues related to the civic, educational and cultural needs and aspirations of African-American women.”

Belcher is a Polk County District Associate Judge in Iowa's 5C District. Appointed in 2010, she became the first African-American female judge in the state of Iowa. Belcher is a native of Plymouth, N.C. and attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she received her B.A. degree with a major in administration of justice and a minor in broadcast journalism. Belcher is a 1995 graduate of Drake University Law School where she was president of the BLSA chapter, secretary of the Student Bar Association and a member of the Frederick Douglass Moot Court Team. After graduating she was a judicial law clerk for then Iowa Supreme Court Justice Louis Lavorato and in 1995, she became an Assistant Polk County Attorney before her appointment as a District Associate Judge.
