On display through Friday, March 26, the exhibition is curated by Michael Schonhoff of Kansas City, Mo., who will also serve as a visiting artist for the USD Department of Art.

“Black & Blue: Kansas City’s Grit & Grace” exemplifies the grassroots character of many Kansas City artists, including Anne Pearce, Archie Scott Gobber, Christopher Leitch, David Ford, Davin Watne, Dylan Mortimer, Jaimie Warren, Jason Myers, Jay Norton, Jess Owings, John Carroll, Kent Smith, Laura Berman, Megan Gallant, Peregrine Honig and Schonhoff.

“Having moved to Kansas City more than 10 years ago, I have come to characterize through experience and witness a certain quality of grittiness, determination, drive, and grassroots bruises associated with art making and arts organizations in Kansas City,” said Schonhoff.

Born in Dubuque, Iowa, Schonhoff’s creative practice includes being an artist, musician and arts professional. His work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions locally, nationally and internationally and his works appear in numerous public and private collections such as the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas, Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art in Kansas, John and Maxine Belger Family Foundation in Missouri and the Studio Place Arts in Vermont. He earned his M.F.A. in visual art at the State University of New York at Buffalo and a B.F.A. at Iowa State University where he was awarded the Helen Beresford/Frances Seeds Scholarship in Art. Currently, he serves as assistant curator, Community Outreach and Exhibition Management, at the H&R Block Artspace at the Kansas City Art Institute.

A closing reception for the show is scheduled for Friday, March 26from 7 to 9 p.m. The public is invited to attend free of charge. The John A.
