Match Day reveals medical students residencies
The Sanford School of Medicine graduating class has 48 students with 46 students placing into residencies. One student did not place due to a July graduation date, and another student opted to delay application to residency programs for one year. Eleven students will train in residencies in South Dakota, at least for their first year. Seventeen students were placed in primary care residencies around the country. Students selected 15 different specialties and will train in 20 different states.
"Most of the students received their first or second choice for residencies," Paul Bunger, Ph.D., dean of medical student affairs for the school, said. "That is a testament to their abilities and the quality education they received in medical school."
For the first two years, medical students are taught on the Vermillion campus. Third- and fourth-year students are trained in Rapid City, Sioux Falls or Yankton.
