Zenel was awarded the 2009 American Academy of Pediatrics Education Award, which “recognizes a member of the Academy whose career reflects educational contributions that have had a broad and positive impact on the health and well-being of children and adolescents.” Zenel is executive director of Medical Education at Sanford Health, professor and chief of the Division of General Pediatrics for the medical school and director of the Sanford Pediatric Residency Program.

"Joe is a superb clinician and educator," said H. Eugene Hoyme, M.D., professor and chair of the medical school's Department of Pediatrics, chief medical officer for Sanford Children's Hospital and senior vice president for children’s services at Sanford Clinic. "We were fortunate enough to recruit Joe last fall from Oregon Health & Sciences University where he had a distinguished career as a general pediatric clinician and educator. He has held countless regional and national leadership roles in pediatrics."

An associate editor of Pediatrics in Review, the continuing education journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Zenel is also the senior author of “Pediatrics,” a major textbook in the field of general pediatrics.
