Medical school professor from The U named to national leadership role
An associate professor in the medical school’s Department of Family Medicine, Brechtelsbauer also serves as associate director and director of geriatrics training for the Center for Sioux Falls Family Medicine, Sioux Falls Family Medicine Residency. He teaches medical students and residents for the school, providing both didactic presentations and clinical experiences in nursing facilities.
Brechtelsbauer attended his first association meeting in 1987. He served as the program chair for the annual symposium in 2004 and 2005. In 2000-2001 he served as the chair of the American Medical Directors Certification Program. He’s regarded as a well-respected teacher in Certified Medical Director Core Curriculum courses and served on the committee that created the current curriculum. In 2004, Brechtelsbauer received the AMDA's prestigious James Pattee Award. He was named the South Dakota Family Doctor of the Year in 2004. He has lived in Sioux Falls since 1985 and is active in promoting long-term care throughout the state.
Brechtelsbauer's goals as president include strengthening the AMDA's role in the national health care debate, improving the performance of medical directors, attending physicians and other members of the health care team through innovative educational programs, supporting and enhancing state chapters and optimizing the AMDA's operations.
