The preliminary round will take place on Feb. 11 from 3-5 p.m., with top students advancing to the finals on Feb. 18 from 3-5 p.m. Both rounds will be held in the Muenster University Center Ballroom 225BC.

The USD 3MT competition celebrates the innovative research being done by graduate students at USD, allowing them to communicate the significance and impact of their work. Students have three minutes to present their findings to a non-specialized audience using just one PowerPoint slide. The competition was developed by the University of Queensland in Australia and is now held at universities across the world.

“USD students join a truly global community when they choose to compete in 3MT. The competition takes place at more than 900 universities across more than 85 countries, and for the past eight years, our students have consistently held their own,” said Darin Hochstein, director of Graduate Education. “Their performances demonstrate the impressive work happening here at USD. I cannot wait to see what our 2026 competitors bring to the table.”

The first-place winner will receive $350 and an opportunity to represent USD at the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools 3MT competition in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 27, 2026. Second and third-place winners will be awarded $250 and $150, respectively.

The competition is free and open to the public, and both rounds will also be livestreamed on the USD Graduate School Facebook page. For more information on the competition and eligibility, visit usd.edu/3MT.
