Hurtado, director of the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA, has published several articles and books related to educational outcomes, campus climates and college impact on student development. She will address, “What Matters in STEM: Institutional Contexts That Influence STEM Bachelor’s Degree Completion Rates,” at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17 in room 22A of the Lee Memorial Medical and Science Building, and at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 18 she will present “Habits of the Mind: Student Diverse Learning Outcomes” in the ballroom of the Muenster University Center. Both programs are free and open to the public.

In addition to coordinating national research projects, including a U.S. Department of Education-sponsored project on how colleges are preparing students to achieve the cognitive, social and democratic skills to participate in a diverse democracy, Hurtado has served on several editorial boards for journals in education as well as on the boards for the American Association of Higher Education, the Higher Learning Commission, and she is past-president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education. Hurtado obtained her Ph.D. in education from UCLA, Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and B.A. in sociology from Princeton University.
