“Dr. Moran brings a great deal of experience and leadership to the University of South Dakota and we’re looking forward to him joining our community,” said James W. Abbott, USD President. “As a scholar, educator and administrator, Dr. Moran has developed and provided direction for many academic programs. He is a great addition to USD.”

Moran has served as vice chancellor for academic and student affairs with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education for more than four years. Previously, he was senior associate vice chancellor/chief academic officer, and associate vice chancellor for academic and student affairs with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Moran also served as interim president of Edinboro University for one year (June 2011-12).

Additionally, he served in the University of Tennessee System Office as assistant vice president for academic affairs as well as several other positions at the University of Tennessee, including dean of the College of Human Ecology and vice president for the University of Tennessee Research Corporation. Moran also was head of Family Relations and Child Development at Oklahoma State University and served on the faculty at the University of Tennessee, Oklahoma State University, Virginia Tech University and the University of Oklahoma.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of helping the University of South Dakota reach its goal of being the best small, public flagship university in the nation built upon a liberal arts foundation,” stated Moran, who serves on the advisory boards for the National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education, the National Council on Personalized Education and Pennsylvania's Complete College America Initiative.

Moran holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in psychology and history from Duke University, a Master of Science degree in psychology from the University of Oklahoma and a Ph.D. in family relations and child development from Oklahoma State University.

Kurt Hackemer, Ph.D., who has served as acting provost and vice president for academic affairs since February, will return to his position as chair of the department of history at USD.
