Rawlins Visiting Artist Series at USD features classical pianist
Schenkman, who is this year's Rawlins Series Fall Visiting Artist, will perform music by Mozart, Clementi, Scarlatti, Bach and Ginastera. He will also conduct a master class for USD piano students at Colton Recital Hall on Oct. 6 at 10 a.m. Both events are free and open to the public.
Voted Best Classical Instrumentalist by the readers of the Seattle Weekly in 2006, Schenkman performs as a solo pianist, chamber musician and as harpsichordist with the Seattle Baroque Orchestra. He’s a previous recipient of the Erwin Bodky Award from the Cambridge Society for Early Music and has recorded more than 30 CDs of 17th and 18th century repertoire, including recordings on historical instruments from the National Music Museum and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. As a pianist he has been a featured guest with the Chameleon Arts Ensemble of Boston, the Daedalus Quartet, the Northwest Sinfonietta and Philharmonia Northwest. He has played solo piano recitals in Boston, New York, Peterborough (N.H.), Portland (Ore.), Seattle, Vancouver, Winston-Salem and on a Chilean tour sponsored by Partners of the Americas. In 2009 he participated in the Haydn and Mendelssohn bicentennial celebrations with performances at the Frick Collection in New York and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Schenkman is a graduate of the New England Conservatory and received his Master of Music degree with honors in performance from the Indiana University School of Music.

Rawlins of Balboa Island, Calif., the Rawlins Series is an annual event that invites world-renowned concert pianists to perform and work in master classes with USD piano students and potential piano majors. A USD music alumna, Mrs. Rawlins studied piano with Genevieve Truran, graduating with a piano performance degree. She was an avid supporter of the arts both at The University of South Dakota and in California until her death in May.
