The 2013 Lavender Lecture will address judicial independence as well as Varnum v. Brien, a unanimous Iowa Supreme Court decision that struck down a statutory same-sex marriage ban as unconstitutional. Following the lecture, which is free and open to the public, the ACLU of South Dakota will host a reception for Streit in the Law School Commons.

Appointed to the Iowa Supreme Court in 2001, Streit served the state of Iowa as a trial court and appellate judge for more than 27 years. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Iowa and his J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law where he edited the school law journal. Additionally, he has served on the Board of Counselors of Drake Law School, chair of the New Judge Training and Mentor Program, STOP Violence Against Woman Coordinating Council, Iowa Supreme Court Select Committee on Child Welfare, and the Judicial Evaluation and Performance Committee. Streit was also chair of the Supreme Court Education Advisory Committee and began the Iowa Judicial Institute in 1992. Streit and two fellow justices recently received the John F. Kennedy Profiles in Courage Award for their role in the Iowa Supreme Court decision recognizing marriage equality.
