South Dakota artist Dick Termes to be featured at USD
"Up, Down, and All Around: 24 by Termes," opens Aug. 23 and is scheduled to run through Sept. 13 in the Main Gallery of the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts on the USD campus. A reception for the artist and gallery discussion, which is free and open to the public, is Friday, Sept. 12 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Termes’ art is recognized from San Francisco to France and from New York to Japan for his paintings on spheres—each is a revolving three-dimensional space/time exploration of an entirely closed universe. Dubbed Termespheres, his paintings present an optical illusion, an inside-out view of the total physical world as if you were on the inside of the sphere looking out at the same time you were outside looking in.
Dick Termes, a resident of Spearfish, S.D., has been creating spherical paintings since 1968 when he received his master’s degree in art from the University of Wyoming. He continued his pursuit of his thesis on the Termespheres at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles where he received his master’s degree in Fine Arts.
In addition to his exhibition and gallery lecture, the artist will also offer a two-hour workshop on his art and system of perspective in the USD Art Department from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sept. 12. The exhibition, gallery talk and workshop are jointly sponsored by The University of South Dakota Department of Art and the University Art Galleries with assistance from the South Dakota Arts Council through the Department of Tourism and State Development, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Main Gallery in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts is open free of charge to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and from 1 to 5 p.m. on weekends.
