The Standards of Excellence Recognition Program was established to ensure chartered associations have adopted policies, procedures and structures that deliver a high level of services to HOSA members. This rigorous process, recognizing HOSA state associations for organizational performance in standards areas determined by HOSA Inc., has found that the South Dakota HOSA has met the foundational requirements to support a healthy association, serve as a role model and promote long-term organizational success in preparing future health professionals for the health industry.

Brock Rops has been the executive director of South Dakota HOSA and deputy director of South Dakota AHEC for 11 years. “Our team has done an excellent job building a strong and most reputable student organization via South Dakota HOSA-Future Health Professionals,” Rops said. “We continue to innovate and engage students across the great state South Dakota who aim to fill needs in the workforce as health care professionals.”

South Dakota HOSA earned its national charter in 2012-13. The program was created under the auspices of the South Dakota Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine, tailored for students in South Dakota. The program encourages and builds confidence in students interested in health care careers--many of them from the state’s smaller communities--with the specific goal for them to enter formal training and subsequently practice health professions in South Dakota.

“Interest in health care occupations is garnered through an organization students can believe in, trust in and find purpose in,” said Rops. “Students find nurturing and confidence in their experiences as members of South Dakota HOSA.”
