John R. Curtin, a student at Creighton University, received top honors for best paper in United States history for “Brown vs. Black: Racial Tensions in the 1936 Louis-Schmeling Fight,” while Sarah Roth, a Dordt College student, had the top paper in European history with “The Marburg Colloquy: A Study of the Early Reformation.”

Thirty-two graduate and undergraduate students from eight colleges and universities throughout the region presented or commented on papers at the conference. Winning authors earned certificates and book awards. The conference, which was April 12 at the Muenster University Center, was sponsored by the USD Department of History and the local chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national honor society in history.
