Students from The U learn thrift store culture at the Civic Council
Students also spent the day asking questions about the nonprofit store, which is located on Market Street and has been open since 1921. The students’ efforts were part of the University’s Interdisciplinary Education & Action or “IdEA” Program, which pairs complex problem solving with real world experiences. These students were enrolled in the various themes in IdEA, including Living a Life of Leadership, Ecology of Human Development, Peace and Conflict and Global Health.
"Most days we can forget that there is a real need for programs like the Civic Council in Vermillion and the business of life takes its place," said Courtny Nesheim, AmeriCorps VISTA from the Center for Academic Engagement. "Through this project, and at least for one day, the students were able to see how the Vermillion community supports their neighbors and friends and at the same time see their academic experiences connect to the community."
Students involved in the project included: Monica Bickett, Nick Anson, Kari Wolff, Kelsey Grosdidier, Erika Carlson and Ryan Tacke of Vermillion, and Kelly Brandner of Groton, S.D.
