The Written Word exhibition coming to University Art Galleries
“The Written Word” features five artists who create visual artworks from word-based texts: Elissa Levy, Karen Baldner with Björn Krondorfer, Trong Nguyen, Nina Katchadourian and An Xiao. Levy, who lives and works in New York City, is a visiting artist with an upcoming artist residency at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop. She will present her work at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 28 at the Warren M. Lee Center for Fine Arts 172. Baldner, who is from West Germany, is an associate professor at the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, Ind. where she teaches book arts. She collaborates with Krondorfer and has received funding for her work from Fulbright grants and National Endowment for the Arts. Nguyen, a Vietnamese-born artist working in New York City, exhibits his work throughout the world, including at the New York’s Fruit + Flower Deli and in Ho Chi Minh City at Galerie Quynh. Katchadourian is a prolific artist and faculty member at the NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study. She is represented by Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco and has exhibited at the PS1/MoMA, the Serpentine Gallery and Saatchi Gallery. Xiao, an American artist, is also a designer, writer and technologist who looks at the politics and growing role of Internet culture in countries like China, Uganda and the United States.
USD graduate students will perform Xiao’s “Together/Alone” piece three times during the exhibition at the John A. Day Gallery: from 2 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 8 and Nov. 15, and from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 22. Gallery director Alison Erazmus will also lead a gallery discussion for the Books in Context Series, hosted by the Vermillion Public Library, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21 at the Day Gallery. These events are free and open to the public.
