The gift, which remembers the duty, sacrifice, achievements and honor of America’s “greatest generation,” provides $50,000 per year for the next two years to undergraduate students who are enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences or the School of Education. Scholarship recipients must also be graduates of a South Dakota high school. Students will be eligible for the scholarship in their first year at USD, and they may also be eligible for a subsequent award. Winners will need to demonstrate the personal characteristics of the many heroes described in Tom Brokaw’s book, The Greatest Generation.

Tom Brokaw was recently on the USD campus during Dakota Days, presenting the lecture, “Uncle Sam Needs Us,” and he also filmed a segment for NBC’s “Today” show honoring the legacy of former USD faculty member William O. “Doc” Farber. The Brokaws are both USD graduates. Tom Brokaw is a 1964 graduate and Meredith (Auld) Brokaw graduated in 1962 from The U.

“This generous gift from Tom and Meredith Brokaw helps us to continue recruiting and serving the best and brightest graduates from South Dakota high schools,” said Matthew Moen, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, “and it will be an inspiration to our young recipients to be associated with such distinguished graduates of USD, and with such international humanitarians as Tom and Meredith Brokaw.”
