U Discover Scholars at The U to present 2010 research projects
The poster session, which is free and open to the public, is from 5 to 7 p.m. at the atrium of the Andrew E. Lee Memorial Medicine and Science Building, and includes more than 70 posters on display.
Under the direction of Keith Robinson, Ph.D., associate professor of philosophy, U. Discover is a program that sponsors USD undergraduate students who conduct research projects with faculty mentors during the summer. U. Scholars to present their research (along with their major) are: Frank DePaula (biology/Spanish) of Vermillion; Nolan Goetzinger (English/philosophy) of Rapid City, S.D.; Max Grandi (biology) of Tabor, S.D.; Justin Johnson (biology) of Omaha, Neb.; Aubrey Jones (chemistry) of Mitchell, S.D.; Teniesha Kessler (English) of Castana, Iowa; Kayla Konkol (education) of Custer, S.D.; Marie Koster (biology) of Yankton, S.D., Mara Lindokken (communication studies) of Sibley, Iowa; Margaret Schuneman (biology/psychology) of Milbank, S.D.; and Kendra Van Nyhuis (music) of Vermillion. Research topics to be displayed include a study of influenza virus infections, improving safety in the chemistry classroom, the life and work of the poet Charles Bukowski, college student spending in South Dakota, causes of cardiovascular disease, cataloging and analyzing East Asian flutes, and more.
The 10-week, U. Discover program featured weekly meetings with workshops and presentations from guest speakers to help U. Discover Scholars present their research professionally. Coordinated by the Undergraduate Research Council and open to all undergraduate students who must complete a competitive application process, U. Discover is committed to promoting undergraduate research and creative scholarship at The U in all disciplines. In addition to the July 26 poster session, U. Discover Scholars will present their research at regional and national venues, including IdeaFest at The U.
