University Art Galleries at USD hosts Governors Art Exhibit
The University Art Galleries at USD along with the Dacotah Prairie Museum in Aberdeen, S.D.; the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City, S.D.; the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center at Pierre, S.D.; and the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls are sponsoring this touring exhibit created by some of South Dakota’s finest artists.
To be considered for this exhibit, each artist must be a resident of South Dakota and create work within the state. This year’s jurors, which included Mary Maxon, curator at the Dahl Arts Center; Lora Schaunaman, curator of exhibits at Dacotah Prairie Museum; and David Merhib, director of the Visual Arts Center at the Washington Pavilion; selected 47 pieces from more than 250 submitted works of art.
Jeff Freeman, USD professor of painting and drawing, won the “Jurors’ Choice Award” for his oil painting, “Obsessive Compulsive Opera with Three Sleeping Karma Dogs.” Many artists with connections to USD were also recognized with honorable mention, including Ariadne Albright, Sara Fakhraie, Phillip Michael Hook, Joseph Night and Justin Tobin.
A reception for the exhibition and local artists is scheduled during Dakota Days weekend, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1 at the John A. Day Gallery.
