University Libraries at USD receive Janklow papers
As part of the Janklow Archival Project at USD, these boxes of gubernatorial records will be stored in a climate-controlled, secure area of the Archives and Special Collections section at University Libraries. In accordance with Janklow’s wishes, University Archives will digitize the records and make them available on the Internet insofar as state and federal privacy laws permit.
“Many times, political papers are closed and not available to the public because they don’t want others to see the inner workings of government,” explained Dan Daily, archivist and associate dean of libraries at USD. “But Gov. Janklow was upfront on providing this access. He wanted to share this history with South Dakotans.”
Janklow announced on Oct. 5, 2011 that he would deposit his entire collection of gubernatorial records and personal political papers to the University of South Dakota. The collection dates back to more than three decades when he served as a Legal Aid lawyer on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation and includes documents from his time as South Dakota Attorney General, governor and as a member of the United States House of Representatives.
“We couldn’t be more excited to have these documents at USD,” stated Anne Moore, USD Dean of Libraries. “It’s a very convenient and appropriate location for people to visit and utilize these resources.”
The Chicago-born Janklow, a former Marine, established a lifetime connection with USD after enrolling at the university without ever having graduated high school. He grew up in Flandreau, S.D., and eventually earned a juris doctor from the USD School of Law in 1966. In addition to papers and documents, the records from the Janklow Archival Project at USD include audio and video recordings and memorabilia.
Funding for the Janklow Archival Project is provided by the USD Foundation’s Janklow Scholarship and Archival Fund as well as donations from the Great Plains Foundation.
