University Libraries presents altered book exhibition
Altered books are a mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form which alters its state or meaning. The works in the exhibition include books that have been manipulated through various processes, including cutting, painting, tearing and collage. Final pieces range from sculptural works to those that retain book form and are meant to be read and handled by the viewer. All artwork is original and less than three years old.
Local artists featured in the exhibition will be honored at reception on the second floor of University Libraries at 4 p.m. on March 20. Entries for "Bound and Unbound" were collected after University Libraries and the USD Department of Art collaborated in hosting a lecture and a workshop dedicated to altered books.
"University Libraries are thrilled to bring the tradition of altered books to South Dakota with this exhibit to bring awareness of this imaginative, artistic medium," stated Anne Moore, Ph.D., dean of libraries at The U. "Bound and Unbound: Altered Book Exhibition" is open to the public and is scheduled to run through June 15.
