USD Addiction Studies Graduate Student Earns Minority Fellowship
Anderson, from Chamberlain, South Dakota, has been working as a substance abuse counselor with Native Americans for seven years. She graduated from USD in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in behavioral science and is finishing a master’s degree in addiction studies. She works for Indian Health Service on the Crow Creek Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
As a NMFP-AC fellow, Anderson will receive NAADAC training, education, professional guidance and a tuition stipend of up to $20,000 for the current school year. After graduation she hopes to become a licensed addiction professional with IHS on the Crow Creek reservation.
NAADAC said this inaugural program is in response to President Barack Obama’s 2013 plan to reduce health disparities and improve behavioral health care for racially and diverse people in the U.S.
